Design Notes

For this year’s report, we chose a tree motif to visually represent the concepts of growth, time and change inherent in the theme: Two decades of innovation, generations of impact.

The tree is a perfect symbol for WCHRI. It conveys our deep roots in research, our growing strength, and the many branches and fruits that represent our staff, members, trainees and research output. Eight species are represented, all of which are native to Alberta, including larch, willow, elm and apple. The tree rings also beautifully illustrate the passage of time since the institute’s founding in 2006.

The report uses the contemporary serif font Lora, designed by Cyreal. Lora is optimized for screen appearance while also conveying an artistic voice with its brushed curves and calligraphic roots.

The colour palette uses a variety of tints and shades pulled from the established WCHRI brand colours. Many of the prominent colours were darkened and saturated to create rich jewel tones that make the forest feel lush and vibrant.

The overall aesthetic is lively, colourful, and yet scientific, evoking a vintage encyclopedia style that showcases the articles that tell WCHRI’s story.
